      Quick Tips - Paddock Visual Estimates of Biomass using the Survey123 App

      A quick guide on completing Visual Paddock Biomass Estimates.

      Walk into your paddock to your first visual assessment point on your transect.

      Step 1: Open the Pasture Biomass Collector form. Click "Collect" to record the first estimate.

      Step 2: Input your:

      • email address (lower case)
      • property name
      • Click - 'Visual Estimates'

      Step 3: Take a photo of the transect (direction of the line you will walk in your paddock).

      Step 4: Take another photo looking down at the visual estimate location. 

      Input your field estimate TSDM (Kg/ha) of your pasture at this location in the paddock. e.g.300 kg/ha

      Step 5: Select the Dominant Species of pasture at your location.

      Step 6: WALK 10 steps to the next location. Press the + button to record the next assessment at this new location.

      Step 7: Complete steps 4 - 6 above for 5 locations ~10m apart along the transect. Once completed, press the VA_Screenshot_Email Details_Step1_Submit Tick(bottom right of form). Select: 'SAVE in OUTBOX'.

      Step 8: When you have completed all transects, ensure you are connected to a reliable internet connection.

      Open the biomass form > Select OUTBOX > Select 'Send Now'. All data on the device will be uploaded.

      Optional: You may wish to include a Co-dominant Species and Sub-dominant Species description of pasture present in the paddock and estimate the unpalatable species %, unpalatable 3P species %, estimated Average Dry Matter % for the whole transect and green fraction %.

      You can set your Property Name and paddocks as a favorite in the app to save you time retyping for future assessments!
