What happens if my PastureKey estimates don't line up with the pasture biomass in the paddock?

The PastureKey service can require ground-truthing to calibrate the model to your property. The model is fed by data - so the more data collected from your property, the more accurate the model will be. If you are seeing a difference between what is on the ground and what PastureKey is telling you, please contact support@cibolabs.com.au so we can investigate further.

To give you some background, the Cibo Labs Pasture Key service:
  • Is currently based on approximately 4500 pasture sites (with GPS locations).
  • At the national level the model has a median absolute error of approximately 300kg/ha, BUT there are known anomalies associated with the recent 12 months of unprecedented pasture growth (in particular, circumstances in southern pasture systems where we have growth from spring 2021 still sitting over the top of summer and autumn growth).
  • In many cases we are seeing >5000kg of senesced material sitting over the top of spring growth where paddocks have been spelled. In these circumstances the model is very likely to be under-predicting considerably.
Throughout 2022 we have captured over 1000 additional sites to characterise these conditions which will be incorporated into the existing model in early 2023.
The world-leading capability has only been made possible through producers engaging with us to identify issues - which allows us to focus our efforts where data needs to be collected to improve the model.
If you are interested, we can provide you with access to our mobile app to collect data to calibrate the model and improve pasture biomass estimates on your property, and others with similar accuracy issues. Follow this link for more information: ULTIMATE GUIDE to Collecting and Submitting Pasture Records on Survey123 App.
We look forward to working with you to improve the model for your property and the broader industry.
